Recommendations and Resources

Nutrition impacts many health outcomes. Identifying healthy choices and providing education is important for patient well-being.

Nutrition in ESRD must focus on maintaining an appropriate weight and fluid balance, sufficient protein intake (albumin), prevention of renal osteodystrophy by way of monitoring mineral metabolism, and reducing the risk of cardiovascular complications. Renal dietitians are the team leaders in assisting patients and providers in understanding the renal diet and the complexity of patient needs.

The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) and American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP) offers guidance for patients, as do some of the dialysis providers. Providers can reference the NKF KDOQI Clinical Practice Guidelines and Nutrition MD for information on the dialysis diet as well.
